Michelle Barkway (b 1977) is an abstract landscape artist inspired by the tall trees and cold seas of her home on Vancouver Island. A former biologist, she incorporates her knowledge and scientific understanding of the natural world into her paintings and illustrations.
A self-taught painter, Barkway has developed a unique and recognizable style. Using hard-edged lines, she aims to simplify intensely complex landscapes into their larger component parts. She works from photos and memories collected while exploring the beaches, forests, and trails of Western Canada.
Her compositions and color palettes invite the viewer to take a deep breath and soak in some West Coast calm and wonder.
Barkway lives with her family in Victoria, BC.
