Canadian artist John Webster is known for his work with Disrupted Realism, a style of painting that combines elements of traditional realism with abstract expressionism and is characterized by distorted or fragmented images, bold brushwork, and unexpected colour choices.
John’s Disrupted Realism paintings are often inspired by the natural world, with wildlife, portraiture, and landscapes as recurring themes. He approaches these subjects in a non-traditional way, using a variety of techniques and features bold, vibrant colours applied in thick, impasto layers to create a sense of movement and dynamism in his paintings. He employs a variety of textures and signature mark-making techniques to create a sense of depth and dimension in his work. The resulting paintings blend recognizable imagery amidst the ‘disruptions’ of paint and colour.
Born in Quebec City, John pursued a career in advertising before moving west to pursue a career in fine art. He has been painting professionally since 2015 and has received critical acclaim for his innovative approach to traditional imagery.
John currently works and teaches out of the ‘500 Collective’, a group studio in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
