Bethany Harper Williams’ work explores the abstract in nature and its connectivity to the collective emotion, questioning what we see, what we remember and the emotions these evoke.
The expanse of nature provides an opportunity to abstract the elements through expressive brush strokes, subtle textures and simple forms. Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns and colours create a visual composite of energy and calm. A low horizon line or the playful placement of simple figures bring context to the expressive composition of colour and texture.
In her series Beach Days and Ski Days, Bethany plays with the idea that less is more. The result is simplifying the figures to nuggets of colour, as drops of candy sprinkled on the canvas. It is not the details that are important but the ability to capture the emotion and mood, gestures and movement, from a simple mark.
After graduating from Concordia University in Montreal with a B.F.A. Honours in Graphic Design, Bethany worked for over 20 years as a graphic designer before committing all her efforts to painting. Based in Toronto, her work can be found in collections in Canada, the United States and Europe.
